5 Ways to Build Your Self-Esteem

It can be so easy to criticize yourself and have thoughts of ways that you can improve flowing through your head. Even though it’s great that you want to get the most out of yourself, it’s important to also engage in self-acceptance and remind yourself of all of the positives that you have to offer yourself and others right now.

Thankfully, there are several ways that you can build your self-esteem today:

1. Turn Your Thoughts Around

Change Your Thoughts

Unfortunately, engaging in self-talk that’s negative and self-destructive can seem natural. Instead, turn those thoughts around! Compliment yourself, and switch around negative things that you’re telling yourself. For example, if you’re thinking, “There’s no way that I’m going to get that promotion.

Something always comes up to block things like that from happening to you,” instead start incorporating thoughts such as this one: “I’m going to get that promotion. Even if it may not seem like it, something will happen to cause it to occur.”

2. Compete With Yourself

One of the easiest ways to destroy your self-esteem is to compare aspects of your life with others. Instead of doing this, turn your focus inward and simply focus on being the best version of yourself that you can be. It doesn’t matter what that ends up being as compared to others. As long as you’ve gotten the most out of yourself, that’s all that you can ever ask, and be grateful and thankful for that.

3. Celebrate the Little Things

Don’t feel that something needs to be viewed as major for it to be celebrated. Celebrate the little things too. Also make sure to celebrate what you did do as opposed to focusing on what you didn’t. Of course, you don’t need to have a big celebration for every accomplishment, but take moments to enjoy all of the small things.

These can include things such as completing a school or work assignment and congratulating yourself on steps that you’re taking towards your larger goals.

4. Exercise

Exercise is one of the most productive things that you can do to boost your overall mood as well as improve your physical, mental and emotional health. Breaking a sweat not only releases endorphins, which help you naturally view yourself in a more positive light, but it also increases your level of motivation, which allows you to get more things done in a more productive manner than you had been doing before.

5. Be Selfless

One of the best ways to improve your self-esteem is by doing things for others. This is because doing so helps you realize how much of a positive impact you can have on others and how important you are to their lives. It’s also important to focus on the little things as it relates to selflessness.

Of course, spending hours volunteering is great, but, if that’s not possible, simply help others who you interact with throughout the day however you can. It may seem counter-intuitive that selflessness helps improve how you view yourself, but it does.
